Surf City, NC Movers

Surf City is a beach town on Topsail Island in Pender and Onslow counties, and the Town of Surf City also reaches onto the mainland across the Intracoastal Waterway. Almost every move here crosses the Surf City bridge, a 3,800-foot high-rise bridge that opened in 2018 to replace the old swing bridge. NC 50 and NC 210 are the main roads on the island, and the town is a regular stop for our North Carolina moving crews.

Housing is a mix of oceanfront houses on pilings, sound-side homes with docks, island cottages, condos, and homes on the mainland side. About 63 percent of the housing units were vacant in the 2020 Census, which points to a lot of second homes and rentals. The median home value is about half a million dollars, and the median age is around 37, younger than most beach towns nearby. Raised homes mean outside stairs, and sound-side lots often mean long driveways, so we plan the carry before moving day. Summer weekends are the hard part. Beach traffic backs up at the bridge and along NC 50 and NC 210, and rental changeover days add more cars to the road. We book early starts when we can. Topsail Island also takes hurricane season seriously, since the bridge is a key evacuation route and was built to allow three lanes when leaving the island. From June through November we watch the forecast, and there is never a fee to reschedule if a storm is coming.
