What a Typical Moving Day Looks Like
No guesswork and no surprises. Here’s how our crews run your move, start to finish.
Most of the stress of moving comes from not knowing what happens next. So here is the whole day laid out, the way our crews actually run it in the Carolinas, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Tampa.
Every A & M crew is made up of our own background-checked, drug-tested W-2 employees, never subcontractors or day laborers. The people who show up at your door work for us, were trained by us, and answer to the owners.
It starts before moving day. When you call, an owner or our office calls you back within 15 minutes (8am to 8pm) to go over your home, your items and your date. A $100 deposit holds your spot and goes toward your move. And if your plans change, there’s never a rescheduling fee.
Moving Day, Step by Step
1. Arrival & Walkthrough
Your crew lead introduces the team and walks the home with you. You point out what’s going, what’s staying, anything fragile or high-value, and any tight stairs or doorways. We agree on the plan before a single item moves.
2. Protect the Home
Before loading starts, the crew lays floor protection and pads door frames and railings. Furniture gets wrapped in moving pads and stretch wrap, and beds, tables and other large pieces are taken apart when they need to be. All of this is included at no additional cost.
3. Load the Truck
Heavy, sturdy pieces go on first and build the base. Boxes and lighter items are packed in tight around them so nothing shifts on the road. Fragile boxes ride on top, and nothing gets tossed in loose.
4. Final Check of Your Old Home
Before the truck pulls away, you and the crew lead walk every room, closet, attic, garage and shed together so nothing gets left behind. On long-distance moves, this is when payment is taken, once everything is loaded. Then we head to your new place.
5. Unload & Place
At your new home, you show the crew where each room is. Furniture goes exactly where you want it, and boxes go to the rooms they’re labeled for, not stacked in the garage for you to sort later.
6. Set Up & Wrap Up
Beds and furniture we took apart get put back together. We do a final walkthrough with you and check that the truck is empty. On local moves, we bill by the hour, so payment is taken at the end of the day. You’re not rushed, and questions are always welcome.
How to Get Ready for Your Crew
Pack & Label Ahead
Have boxes packed, taped and labeled by room before the crew arrives. Short on time? We can pack the whole home or just the kitchen and fragile items, and we bring the supplies.
Keep Essentials With You
Pack a bag with medications, documents, chargers, keys, valuables and a change of clothes. Keep it in your car so it doesn't end up at the back of the truck.
Disconnect Appliances
Washers, dryers and refrigerators with water lines need to be disconnected before moving day. Empty and defrost the fridge the day before. Paint, propane, fuel and chemicals can't go on the truck.
Clear the Way
Save space for the truck near your door, reserve the elevator if your building requires it, and send us any building rules. Kids and pets are happiest out of the path of heavy lifting.
Moving Day FAQs
It depends on the size of your home, how much is packed, stairs or long walks to the truck, and the drive between homes. Most apartments take a few hours, and larger homes can take most of the day. Your clock starts when our crew arrives at your home, not when we leave the office, and stops when we finish at your new place. We’ll give you an honest estimate when you get your free quote.
Yes, please plan on it. You (or someone who can make decisions for you) should stay from the first walkthrough to the final check at your new home. That way the crew can ask questions as they go, and every item ends up exactly where you want it.
We accept credit cards, debit cards, personal checks and certified checks. We don’t accept cash. Your $100 deposit is already applied to the total. Local moves are billed hourly in 15-minute increments with a 3-hour minimum, and payment is taken after the move. Long-distance moves come with a binding estimate that never changes after you book, and payment is taken once the truck is loaded.
It happens more than you’d think. We can keep your belongings locked on our truck overnight, or move them into secure storage and deliver when you get the keys. There’s never a rescheduling fee.
Yes. On long-distance moves you get your own dedicated truck and the same W-2 crew from door to door, with no hand-offs to another company, plus a guaranteed delivery date.
Our crews protect your home and belongings at every step, but if anything is damaged, our Owner’s Promise kicks in: an owner calls you the same day, and claims are resolved in 60 to 90 days.
