Sunset Beach is one of the quietest and most beloved beach towns in Brunswick County, and it is only about five miles from our base in Calabash. Between the island, the mainland neighborhoods off NC-179, and the Ingram Planetarium area, it offers a slower pace that people fall in love with fast.
Moving here comes with a few coastal challenges. Island homes are often raised on pilings with long outdoor staircases, and many are packed with vacation-rental furniture that has to come out before a new owner moves in. Everything on the island goes over the high-rise Sunset Beach bridge, and summer traffic can back up quickly, so we schedule island moves early in the day whenever we can.
On the mainland side you will find newer planned communities and golf neighborhoods with HOA rules on truck parking and move times. We plan around those rules before moving day, not after.

Moving in Sunset Beach: Local Tips From Our Crew
Parking, trash pickup, traffic and building rules can make or break moving day in Sunset Beach. Here’s what we plan around.
Wednesday trash pickup
Inside town limits, GFL picks up garbage every Wednesday on the mainland and island. This town service doesn’t cover the ETJ, so those addresses sign up with GFL directly.
Paid island parking
Paid parking is enforced 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from April 1 to October 31 and is free outside those hours. Park only in marked spaces, and note that side streets from 7th through 11th are now no-parking.
Storm bridge closures
During hurricanes the town closes the bridge to the island. When it reopens, island property owners with re-entry passes go first, then the general public.
Golf carts need registration
Golf carts can only use public roads if the driver is licensed and the cart is registered and inspected by the DMV, and only on roads posted under 35 mph.
Seaside Road drop-off
Extra trash and recycling can go to the county site at 746 Seaside Road SW, open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
