Moving in the Baltimore Area: Local Tips From Our Crew
Parking, trash pickup, traffic and building rules can make or break moving day in the Baltimore area. Here’s what we plan around.
Harford landfill drop-off
The Harford Waste Disposal Center at 3241 Scarboro Road takes household waste and recyclables from homeowners Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Waits can top an hour, so arrive by 2:30 p.m. or you may be asked to come back another day.
Harford uses private haulers
Harford County doesn’t run trash pickup; licensed private haulers collect both trash and recycling. Call your own hauler to ask about extra boxes or a missed pickup around moving day.
Beltway and I-95 routes
The Baltimore Beltway (I-695) loops around the city through Towson, Parkville, White Marsh, Essex, Dundalk and Catonsville. It meets I-95 near White Marsh and again near Arbutus, so expect these interchanges to set your drive time.
Beltway gap at Key Bridge
Since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in March 2024, the stretch of I-695 between MD 157 and MD 173 has been closed. Don’t plan a route across the harbor on the Beltway; take I-95 or another crossing instead.
Towson move-in week
Towson University’s fall move-in happens in late August, with students checking in at SECU Arena. Expect heavier traffic around campus those days and plan around it if your move is nearby.
