Moving in the Charlotte Area: Local Tips From Our Crew
Parking, trash pickup, traffic and building rules can make or break moving day in the Charlotte area. Here’s what we plan around.
Schedule bulky pickup
Inside Charlotte city limits, furniture, appliances and mattresses must be scheduled for bulky pickup through 311, the CLT+ app or online. Items set out without a request aren’t collected, and they can go to the curb no earlier than the day before and no later than 6 a.m. on pickup day.
Cut cardboard small
Charlotte asks you to cut or tear boxes into small pieces that fit loosely in the green cart, since folded cardboard can wedge in and keep the cart from emptying. Cardboard left outside the cart isn’t collected, so haul the extra to a Mecklenburg County full-service facility.
Keep carts clear
Put carts within 6 feet of the curb with handles facing the house, and leave 3 feet between carts and mailboxes, poles or vehicles. Don’t let the moving truck block them, and bring carts in by midnight on collection day.
US 74 corridor drive
US 74 links Laurinburg, Rockingham, Wadesboro and Monroe to Charlotte and is mostly freeway through this stretch. Monroe has had a toll bypass since 2018, and US 74 enters Charlotte on Independence Boulevard.
UNC Charlotte move-in
UNC Charlotte’s fall move-in happens in mid-August at several locations across campus. Check the university’s housing calendar and steer clear of campus on those days if you can.
