No bridge to the island
There is no bridge to Bald Head Island. Almost everyone arrives by the Bald Head Island Transportation passenger ferry from Deep Point Marina in Southport.
Barge carries the truck
The Bald Head Island Limited barge carries vehicles and equipment to and from the island from its landing at Deep Point Marina. Reservations are required both ways; the barge office (910-457-5205) is open 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.
Book the barge early
Barge reservations must be cancelled at least 24 hours ahead to avoid being charged in full, and only one person may ride in a vehicle on the barge.
Vehicle permits required
Commercial vehicles and trailers need a Village permit to use island roads. Daily permits are sold at the barge office, and special use permits apply outside workdays.
Island speed limit
The island-wide speed limit is 18 mph for all vehicles, and every vehicle must park fully off the paved road.
