How Much Do Movers Cost in Wilmington, NC?
How local moves are priced in Wilmington, from the Historic District and UNCW to the beaches and Brunswick County, what North Carolina rules say about your bill, and how to save.
The Short Answer
A Wilmington move can be a downtown condo with a shared elevator, a beach house past a drawbridge, or a new home in a Leland HOA. The price comes down to one thing: how many hours your crew works. Parking, bridges and building rules decide how smooth those hours go.
Almost every local move is priced the same simple way:
Your crew’s hourly rate × the hours your move takes = your cost
Your hourly rate depends on how many movers you need and where you’re moving, and we give it to you in writing with your free quote. With A & M Friendly Movers, the clock starts when our crew arrives at your home (never when we leave the office) and stops when your furniture is reassembled at the new place. We bill in 15-minute increments with a 3-hour minimum. See how our pricing works.
How Many Hours Will My Move Take?
Time is the biggest part of your cost. These are typical ranges for a local move, including loading, the drive between homes, unloading, and taking apart and putting back together your furniture.
| Home size | Typical crew | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or 1-bedroom apartment | 2 movers | 2 to 4 hours |
| 2-bedroom apartment | 2 to 3 movers | 3 to 5 hours |
| 2-bedroom house | 3 movers | 4 to 6 hours |
| 3-bedroom house (1,500 to 2,000 sq ft) | 3 to 4 movers | 5 to 8 hours |
| 4-bedroom house (2,000 to 3,000 sq ft) | 4 movers | 7 to 10 hours |
| 5+ bedrooms (3,000+ sq ft) | 4 to 5 movers | 9 to 12+ hours, sometimes 2 days |

What Drives the Cost of a Wilmington Move
What adds (or saves) time on moves in and around Wilmington.
Downtown parking & loading
Narrow Historic District streets and metered blocks make it hard to park a truck near your door. The City’s parking page says vehicles loading or unloading can use a designated Commercial Loading Zone, and it lists a meter-bagging application for large vehicles for a fee. Park Wilmington runs it, so ask them early. A truck at your door saves you hours.
Condos & elevators
Riverwalk-area and beach condos usually require an elevator reservation, set move hours and a certificate of insurance. A reserved elevator and loading area keep your hours down. We send the COI free.
Wrightsville Beach & Figure Eight Island
The Wrightsville Beach drawbridge opens only on the hour between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. under federal rules, so a truck can wait for a boat opening. NCDOT also says that once construction begins on the island’s bridge replacement (planned to run through 2032), the Heide Trask Drawbridge will open only on the hour. Figure Eight Island is private and reached by a guarded causeway bridge, so check the gate rules for movers before moving day. Mornings help.
Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, I-140 & Leland
Moves between Wilmington and Leland or Belville use the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, a vertical-lift bridge that carries US 17, 76 and 421, or I-140 around the north side of town. The drive between homes is part of the move, so we plan around rush hour. Brunswick Forest and other Leland HOAs may also have truck-parking rules and gate access. Tell us up front.
UNCW move-in weeks
Around the start and end of each semester, student and landlord moves fill the calendar and traffic near campus gets heavier. In 2026, UNCW move-in ran Aug. 12 to 16 and residential lots were closed to parking. Book early and ask us about weekday slots.
Summer heat & hurricane season
Summers are hot and humid, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Early starts keep your crew and your belongings out of the worst heat, and a backup date protects your move. Rescheduling with us is free.
Local vs. Long-Distance Pricing
Local moves are billed by the hour. Long-distance moves are not. For a long-distance move we give you a binding estimate: one flat price that will not change after you book. You get your own truck, the same crew from door to door, and a guaranteed delivery date.

What North Carolina Rules Say About Your Moving Bill
- Movers need a Commission certificate. The NC Utilities Commission regulates in-state moves, and movers must hold a certificate (a “C” number). A & M Friendly Movers holds NC Certificate C-2969.
- Maximum rates. Every NC mover must follow the Commission’s Maximum Rate Tariff, which sets the most a mover can charge. Moves of 50 miles or less are billed hourly.
- The 120% rule. If you get a written estimate, your final bill can’t be more than 120% of it unless you sign a change form before the move or ask for more services.
- Two protection options. Basic protection at no charge (60 cents per pound per item) or Full Value Protection for an added fee. See our coverage options.

Empty heavy drawers
Take out anything heavy or breakable so dressers move quickly and safely.
Pick the right crew size
A bigger crew often finishes faster, which can make the total about the same or lower.
Ask about discounts
5% off for military families, and referred customers save $100 on a local move.
Book early
Weekends and the end of the month fill up first. Early booking gets you the best date and start time.
Red Flags to Watch For
The NC Utilities Commission warns about these.
No certificate number
An unlicensed mover may not be properly insured, so you may not be reimbursed for loss or damage.
Online quote, then a rental truck
The NC Commission warns that some websites are brokers, and an uncertificated mover may show up in a rental truck.
Blank forms
Don’t sign blank forms. Make sure every service and charge is on the paperwork.
Estimates with no details
A written estimate should list the services and charges. Be careful with a number that comes with no details.
