How Much Should You Tip Movers?

A simple guide to tipping movers: how much to give for a half-day, a full day, a long-distance move, and when tipping is not expected.

The Short Answer

Tips are never required, but they are appreciated. A common guideline is $4 to $5 per mover for each hour worked, or about $20 to $40 per mover for a half-day move and $40 to $80 per mover for a full day. Give more for stairs, heavy items, bad weather or an especially long, hard move.

These are general guidelines, not company policy. Tip what feels right for the service you received.

Long-distance delivery day$40 to $100 per mover, handed over when the truck is unloaded

When to Tip More

Lots of stairs

Walk-ups, narrow staircases and multiple flights add real effort and time.

Heavy or awkward items

Pianos, safes, big sectionals and gym equipment take extra care and muscle.

Weather

Heat, rain, snow or ice make every carry harder.

Long carries

A far parking spot or a big apartment complex means a lot more walking.

Extra care

Crews that wrap, protect floors and rebuild beds for you have gone beyond the basics.

A tough schedule

Changes, late starts or an extra-long day are worth recognizing.

How and When to Tip Movers

  • Tip at the end. Wait until the job is finished and you have checked your belongings and the paperwork.
  • Cash is simplest. It goes straight to the people who did the work.
  • Tip each mover, or the crew lead. If you hand the total to the crew lead, ask that it be split evenly.
  • Offer water and a meal. Cold water and a lunch on a long day show appreciation. Treat them as extras, not a replacement for a tip.
  • Tip packers separately. If a different crew packed or unpacked for you, they get their own thank-you.

Do You Have to Tip Movers?

No. A tip is a thank-you, not a fee, and it is never part of your moving bill. If something went wrong, speak up on moving day and note it on your paperwork. Damage and missing items are handled through your mover’s coverage, not through tips. Learn about your options on our coverage page.

Tipping Movers: FAQs

A common rule is $4 to $5 per mover for each hour worked, or $20 to $40 per mover for a half-day and $40 to $80 per mover for a full day. Go higher for stairs, heavy items or hard conditions.

No. Tips are never required. They are a way to say thank you for hard physical work, and they are the crew’s to keep.

About $20 to $40 per mover, or $4 to $5 per mover per hour. For a crew of three, that is roughly $60 to $120 total.

After. Tip when the job is done and you have had a chance to see how the crew handled your belongings. For a long-distance move, tip when the truck is unloaded.

Tip each mover directly, or hand the total to the crew lead and say it is to be split evenly. Cash is the simplest way.

If a separate crew packed your home, it is thoughtful to tip them too, about $10 to $20 per packer for a half-day.

Tell the crew lead right away and note it on the paperwork before you sign. Tipping is for good service. Damage claims are handled through your mover’s coverage, not through tips.

Cold water on a hot day and a meal on a long move are always appreciated, but they are on top of a tip, not instead of one.
