Hereford is the rural heart of northern Baltimore County. It is an unincorporated community centered on Exit 27 of Interstate 83, roughly halfway between the Baltimore city line and the Pennsylvania border, and it gives its name to the “Hereford Zone,” the wide band of farms, horse country, woods and reservoir land that makes up the county’s northern end. Strict zoning keeps most large planned subdivisions out, so homes here tend to sit on big lots with a lot of green around them.
Hereford suits families drawn to Hereford High School and its agricultural roots, people who want acreage and trails outside the back door, and commuters who can use I-83 to reach Hunt Valley, Towson, Baltimore or York. Homes cost more than the Baltimore County average, winters are snowier, and you will drive for most errands. For many buyers, that trade is exactly the point.

Where Is Hereford?
Hereford is in northern Baltimore County, Maryland. Wikipedia describes it as a halfway point between the northern border of Baltimore City and the Mason–Dixon Line. Because it is unincorporated and has no legal boundary, most Hereford-area addresses use nearby post office names, especially Parkton (ZIP 21120) and Monkton (ZIP 21111).
Main routes:
- Interstate 83, Exit 27 is Hereford’s front door, with quick access south to Hunt Valley, Towson and Baltimore and north to York County, Pennsylvania.
- Maryland Route 45 (York Road) runs parallel to I-83 and is the main local road through Hereford.
- Maryland Route 137 (Mount Carmel Road) connects Hereford west toward Carroll County.
- Maryland Route 138 (Monkton Road) connects east toward Monkton and Harford County.
The shopping area around Exit 27 has a grocery store, banks, pharmacies and medical offices, which covers most day-to-day errands. Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is the region’s main airport, and York, Pennsylvania, is a straight shot up I-83.
Hereford Population & Demographics
The Census Bureau does not count Hereford as its own place, so there is no official Hereford population. The closest Census geographies are the two ZIP codes that cover most of the Hereford area: 21120 (Parkton, home of Hereford High School) and 21111 (Monkton, home of Hereford Middle School). Keep in mind these ZIP codes also include surrounding communities. Here is how they compare with Baltimore County as a whole.
| Measure | ZIP 21120 (Parkton) | ZIP 21111 (Monkton) | Baltimore County |
|---|---|---|---|
| Population | 7,440 | 4,714 | 847,650 (July 2025 est.) |
| Median age | 40.8 | 48.7 | — |
| Median household income | $162,052 | $136,304 | $91,768 |
| Bachelor’s degree or higher (25+) | 64.2% | 63.7% | 42.3% |
| Median value of owner-occupied homes | $580,900 | $607,200 | $349,300 |
| Mean travel time to work | 36.9 min | 31.9 min | 28.0 min |
Sources: Census Reporter (ACS 2024 5-year estimates) for the ZIP codes; U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts (Vintage 2025 estimate and 2020–2024 ACS) for Baltimore County.
The numbers paint a clear picture: an educated, higher-income, mostly homeowning area where commutes run longer than the county average. Poverty rates are low, at 2.8% in 21120 and 6.3% in 21111. Wikipedia describes the Hereford Zone as one of the most sparsely populated parts of Baltimore County, with large single-family lots and farming dominating the landscape.
Is Hereford Safe?
Hereford is policed by the Baltimore County Police Department. We did not find a Hereford-specific crime report worth quoting, and because Hereford is unincorporated, it does not publish its own statistics. For questions about a specific road or neighborhood, contact the department, and visit the area at different times of day before you buy.
Cost of Living in Hereford
Home Prices
Expect to pay a premium for space. The Census Bureau’s median value for owner-occupied homes is $580,900 in the 21120 ZIP code and $607,200 in 21111 (ACS 2020–2024), compared with $349,300 for Baltimore County and $419,900 for Maryland.
Recent sales run higher still, but they swing a lot because so few homes sell. Redfin reported a median sale price of about $734,837 in ZIP 21111 for the three months ending July 2026, down 30.0% from a year earlier, with 21 homes sold and a median of 37 days on market. In ZIP 21120, Redfin reported a $750,000 median in November 2025 on just 15 sales. With samples that small, a local agent’s comparable sales are the best guide. Many properties are on private wells and septic systems, so budget for those inspections.
Rent
Rentals are rare in the Hereford Zone, and we did not find a reliable rent figure for the area itself. For context, the Census Bureau’s median gross rent for all of Baltimore County is $1,627 a month (2020–2024), and 66.4% of county homes are owner-occupied. If you need a place to land while you shop for a house, look along the I-83 corridor to the south, and use our storage service to hold your belongings until closing.
Best Neighborhoods in Hereford
The Hereford area doesn’t have formal neighborhoods so much as a few distinct parts.
Hereford Village and the Exit 27 Area
The area around I-83 Exit 27 and York Road is the most convenient part of the Hereford Zone. Groceries, banks, pharmacies and doctors are close, the interstate is minutes away, and Hereford High School is just up York Road in Parkton. This area suits commuters and families who want the Hereford schools and rural feel without living miles down a country road.
Parkton and the Northern Farmland
North toward the Pennsylvania line, Parkton is farm country, with corn and soybean fields, older farmhouses and newer homes on large lots. The Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail passes through. It suits buyers who want acreage, barns and quiet, and it keeps the drive to York short. Wikipedia notes that elevation rises to 966 feet near the Mason–Dixon Line, so winters are noticeably harsher up here.
Monkton and My Lady’s Manor
East of Hereford, Monkton covers about 35 square miles of rolling countryside. The area known as My Lady’s Manor, a 10,000-acre estate granted in 1713 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is known for horse farms and stately old homes set back from the road. It suits buyers looking for equestrian properties or historic homes, and it is close to Ladew Topiary Gardens and the rail trail’s Monkton station.
Weather & Climate
Hereford is famous locally for its weather. Wikipedia notes the Hereford Zone’s higher elevation and microclimate, and that it is not unusual in winter for schools elsewhere to open two hours late while Hereford-area schools close. The closest long-term NOAA climate station is Millers 4 NE, just across the county line near the Pennsylvania border. Its 1991–2020 normals show:
- Average annual high 63.4°F and low 43.9°F
- January average high 39.5°F and low 23.7°F
- July average high 84.9°F and low 64.4°F
- About 47.9 inches of precipitation and 34.1 inches of snow a year
For comparison, BWI Airport averages 19.3 inches of snow a year. Best months to move: May through October. If you are moving between December and March, keep a backup date in mind, especially for a home on a hill or a long private lane.

Moving to Hereford: Tips From Our Crew
- Plan around the Hereford microclimate. Snow and ice can linger here when Towson is just wet. We watch the forecast for your address, not Baltimore’s, and if the roads are unsafe we will reschedule with you. There is never a rescheduling fee.
- Send us photos of the driveway and lane. Long gravel drives, narrow bridges over creeks, steep hills and tight turns are common. Knowing ahead of time lets us bring the right size truck or plan a shuttle.
- Keep the truck off soft ground. After rain, lawns and fields turn soft, and many homes have septic fields near the house. Show us where not to drive before we arrive.
- Think about barns, sheds and workshops. Rural moves often include tools, tractor attachments, lumber and outbuilding contents. Tell us about them when you ask for a quote so we plan enough time and crew.
- Heavy items need a plan. Gun safes and pianos are common in country homes. Our piano and safe moving crews bring the right equipment for stairs and uneven ground.
- Moving from York County? Hereford is just down I-83 from the Pennsylvania line, and our York PA & Maryland office serves both sides of it.
Frequently Asked Questions About Moving to Hereford
How much do movers cost in Hereford, MD?
Cost depends on the size of the home, the distance, access (driveways, stairs, outbuildings) and if you want packing. A farmhouse with a barn is a different job than a townhouse. Call our York PA & Maryland team for a free quote, and an owner will call you back within 15 minutes between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
What is the Hereford Zone?
The Hereford Zone is the large rural area of northern Baltimore County served by Hereford High School. It includes communities such as Hereford, Parkton, Monkton, Freeland, Sparks and White Hall, along with Prettyboy Reservoir. Strict zoning keeps lots large and most planned subdivisions out.
Is Hereford a good place to live?
For people who want space, trails and a strong school community, yes. Incomes and education levels are high and the countryside is beautiful. The trade-offs are higher home prices than the county average, few rentals, longer commutes and snowier winters.
What ZIP code is Hereford, MD?
Hereford is unincorporated and doesn’t have a ZIP code of its own. Many homes in the area have Parkton (21120) or Monkton (21111) addresses, and Hereford’s high school and middle school use those two ZIP codes. Check the exact address when you set up utilities, mail forwarding and school enrollment.
Do you do long-distance moves to Hereford?
Yes. For long-distance moves you get a binding estimate, so your price never changes after booking, plus your own dedicated truck, the same W-2 crew door to door and a guaranteed delivery date. Military families get 5% off.
