How Many Hours Will My Move Take?
Time is the biggest part of your cost. These are typical ranges for a local move, including loading, the drive between homes, unloading, and taking apart and putting back together your furniture.

What Drives the Cost of a Carolina Move
What adds (or saves) time on the coastal moves we do every week.
Condos & elevators
Oceanfront and condo buildings usually require an elevator reservation, set move hours and a certificate of insurance. A reserved elevator and loading area keep your hours down. We send the COI free.
HOA & gated communities
Brunswick Forest, Carolina Forest and other HOA neighborhoods often have truck-parking rules and gate access. Tell us the rules up front and we plan around them.
Beach-season traffic
From late April through October, Kings Highway, US 17, US 501 and SC 31 get crowded, especially during big event weekends. Weekday or early starts help.
Bridges & drive time
Moves between Leland and Wilmington cross the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, a lift bridge, or use I-140. The drive between homes is part of the move, so we route around peak times.
Heat & hurricane season
Summer highs sit in the upper 80s to low 90s, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Early starts and a backup date protect your move.

Local vs. Long-Distance Pricing
Local moves are billed by the hour. Long-distance moves are not. For a long-distance move we give you a binding estimate: one flat price that will not change after you book. You get your own truck, the same crew from door to door, and a guaranteed delivery date.

What North and South Carolina Rules Say About Your Bill
North Carolina
- Movers need a Commission certificate. The NC Utilities Commission regulates in-state moves, and movers must hold a certificate (a “C” number). A & M Friendly Movers holds NC Certificate C-2969.
- Maximum rates. Every NC mover must follow the Commission’s Maximum Rate Tariff, which sets the most a mover can charge. Moves of 50 miles or less are billed hourly.
- The 120% rule. If you get a written estimate, your final bill can’t be more than 120% of it unless you sign a change form before the move or ask for more services.
- Two protection options. Basic protection at no charge (60 cents per pound per item) or Full Value Protection for an added fee. See our coverage options.

South Carolina
- Movers need a state certificate. The SC Office of Regulatory Staff (ORS) oversees licensing, insurance and rates for household goods movers, and each mover’s rates are approved by the Public Service Commission.
- Verify the number. Ask for the mover’s certificate number and check it with ORS Consumer Services at (803) 737-5230.
- Check the valuation box. The bill of lading should show the protection you chose. Ask to see it before you sign.

Red Flags to Watch For

No certificate number
An unlicensed mover may not be properly insured, so you may not be reimbursed for loss or damage.
Online quote, then a rental truck
The NC Commission warns that some websites are brokers, and an uncertificated mover may show up in a rental truck.
