How Much Does It Cost to Hire Movers?

What drives the cost of hiring movers, how local and long-distance moves are priced, and how to save without cutting corners.

The Short Answer

The cost to hire movers depends on how much you are moving, how far, when, and which services you add. Local moves are usually priced by the hour for a crew and truck. Long-distance moves are priced by weight and distance or by a flat written quote. We do not guess at a number in a blog post, because every home is different. What Affects the Cost of Hiring Movers

FactorHow it changes the cost
Local vs. long-distanceLocal moves are usually billed by the hour for the crew and truck. Long-distance moves are priced by shipment weight and distance, or by a flat quote after an inventory.
Size of the moveMore rooms and more furniture means more crew hours, more truck space and more packing materials.
Stairs, elevators and carry distanceWalk-ups, long hallways and a far parking spot add time. So does a building that needs an elevator reservation.
Heavy or specialty itemsPianos, safes, gun safes, hot tubs and gym equipment take extra people and equipment.
Packing helpFull or partial packing adds crew hours and materials, but saves you days of work and protects fragile items.
Moving dateWeekends, month-end and summer are the busiest. Mid-week and mid-month dates are often easier to book.
Storage or timing gapsIf your closing dates do not line up, short-term storage adds a monthly cost.
Coverage levelBasic carrier liability is included. Added protection costs extra but changes what you recover if something is damaged.

How Movers Charge

Hourly crew and truck (local)

Best for most local moves. You pay for the time the crew works, so a good plan and a packed-up home save money.

Flat or binding quote (long-distance)

Best when you want a firm number. It is based on a written inventory, so the more accurate your list, the more accurate the price.

By weight and distance (long-distance)

Common for interstate shipments. Final cost depends on the weight on the scale and the miles.

Labor only

You rent the truck and hire a crew to load and unload. Good for a short move or a storage unit.

How to Save Money When You Hire Movers

  • Declutter before the estimate. Every box you do not move is time and weight you do not pay for.
  • Pack ahead of time and label every box by room.
  • Disassemble what you can, and empty drawers that are not rated to move full.
  • Reserve elevators and parking spots in advance.
  • Book mid-week or mid-month when you can.
  • Get at least two written quotes and compare the same scope.
  • Ask what is included: stairs, wrapping, tape and shrink wrap, mattress bags, fuel, travel time.

Cheapest is not always best. Check that the company is licensed and insured, and read our guide on how to choose a moving company before you book.

What a Good Quote Should Include

A good quote is written and specific. It should spell out the rate or flat price, crew size, truck, travel time, packing materials, extra charges for stairs or long carries, and the coverage you are getting. Hiring Movers: FAQs

It depends on the size of the move, the distance, the date and the services you add. Local moves are usually billed by the hour for the crew and truck. Long-distance moves are quoted by weight and distance. The best way to know your number is a free written quote.

For local moves, hourly is standard and usually the best value if your home is packed and ready. For long-distance, a written quote based on an inventory gives you a firm number to plan around.

Declutter first, pack yourself, book a mid-week or mid-month date and hire a crew for loading and unloading only. Compare written quotes for the same scope.

Tips are never required and are not part of your bill. See our guide on how much to tip movers for general guidelines.

A reputable company puts everything in writing before moving day: hourly or flat rates, travel time, packing materials, stairs or long-carry charges and coverage. Ask for it all on the quote and read before you sign.

Two to four weeks ahead is a good target, and more during summer, weekends and the end of the month.

Often yes. A small crew for two or three hours can save your back, protect your belongings and keep the move on schedule.

Tell the mover about every room, large items, stairs, parking, any packing help and your dates. A video walk-through or an in-home estimate for larger moves makes the quote more accurate.
