Moving to Supply, NC: Living in Supply Guide

Supply is the crossroads community in the middle of Brunswick County, North Carolina. It grew up where U.S. 17 meets N.C. 211, and it got its name from the Lockwood Folly River, which traders used as a supply route in the 1700s and 1800s. Today the Supply mailing area stretches from the Green Swamp in the north all the way down Holden Beach Road to the causeway, so a Supply address can mean a farmhouse on a few acres or a short drive to the sand.

Supply suits retirees who want the Brunswick beaches without island prices, families who want a yard and good access to U.S. 17, and anyone who works at the county government complex, the hospital or the community college nearby. It is quiet and unincorporated, with no town hall of its own. The tradeoff is that you drive for most shopping, and summer traffic toward Holden Beach can be heavy.

Where Is Supply?

Supply sits in southern Brunswick County, about midway between Bolivia (the county seat) and Shallotte, and just south of the Green Swamp. The center of the community is the intersection of U.S. 17 (Ocean Highway) and N.C. 211 (Southport-Supply Road to the south, Green Swamp Road to the north). Holden Beach Road runs south from the Supply area to Holden Beach, the barrier island that shares Supply’s 28462 ZIP code.

Approximate driving distances and times from central Supply:

  • Shallotte: about 7.8 miles, roughly 13 minutes
  • Bolivia (Brunswick County government center): about 8.6 miles, roughly 12 minutes
  • Holden Beach: about 12.6 miles, roughly 22 minutes
  • Oak Island: about 13.3 miles, roughly 19 minutes
  • Southport: about 16.7 miles, roughly 25 minutes
  • Calabash: about 22 miles, roughly 29 minutes
  • Leland: about 23.8 miles, roughly 33 minutes
  • Downtown Wilmington: about 26.3 miles, roughly 36 minutes
  • Wilmington International Airport (ILM): about 32.7 miles, roughly 51 minutes
  • Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR): about 51.7 miles, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Raleigh: about 156 miles, roughly 3 hours
  • Charlotte: about 194 miles, roughly 4 hours

Times are free-flow estimates. Add time in summer, when beach traffic backs up on U.S. 17 and Holden Beach Road, especially on Saturdays when vacation rentals turn over.

Supply Population & Demographics

Supply is unincorporated and is not a Census-designated place, so there is no official “town of Supply” population. The closest match is ZIP code 28462, which the Census Bureau tracks as a ZIP Code Tabulation Area. Keep in mind that 28462 also covers Holden Beach and rural land up toward the Green Swamp, so these numbers describe the whole ZIP, not just the crossroads.

The standout number is age. With a median age of 55.4 in the ZIP and 56.4 countywide, Brunswick County is one of the most retirement-heavy places in the state, and it shows in the number of single-story homes, golf communities and quiet streets. Roughly 85% of homes are owner-occupied, so rentals are limited.

Is Supply Safe?

Because Supply is unincorporated, there is no town police department. Law enforcement comes from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, headquartered at the county government complex in Bolivia. We did not find a crime report broken out for the Supply area alone, so we won’t put a number on it. If you are comparing streets, call the Sheriff’s Office or check the county’s public information for the area you are considering, and talk to neighbors when you tour a home.

Cost of Living in Supply

Home Prices

Zillow’s Home Value Index put the typical home value in ZIP 28462 at about $470,700 as of August 2026, up 2.4% from a year earlier. That figure is pulled up by Holden Beach, where oceanfront and second-row homes share the same ZIP code. For comparison, Zillow’s typical value for all of Brunswick County was about $404,800, and for North Carolina about $334,800, over the same period.

Census data shows the other side of the ZIP. The median value of owner-occupied homes in 28462 was $253,000 in the 2020–2024 survey, below the county median of $349,800. In practice, homes on the mainland side, especially older houses and manufactured homes on land along N.C. 211 and the back roads, cost far less than anything near the water. Ask your agent to separate island sales from mainland sales when you look at comps.

Rent

The Census median gross rent in ZIP 28462 is $862 a month (2020–2024), well under the county median of $1,351 and the statewide $1,228. Those survey figures include older, long-held leases, so current asking rents are likely higher. The bigger issue is supply: with about 85% of homes owner-occupied and many beach houses used as vacation rentals, year-round rentals go quickly. Start looking 60 days out if you can.

Best Neighborhoods in Supply

Supply does not have formal neighborhoods the way a town does, so here are the main parts of the area and who they fit best.

Holden Beach Road Corridor

The stretch of Holden Beach Road between Supply and the causeway is where you find the area’s restaurants, a few shops and newer subdivisions. It suits people who want to reach the beach in minutes without paying island prices or dealing with island flood insurance. Traffic picks up on summer weekends, so if you commute north to Bolivia or Wilmington, check how long it takes to get out to U.S. 17 at rush hour.

Lockwood Folly River and Stone Chimney Road

East of Holden Beach Road, the land along the Lockwood Folly River and Stone Chimney Road mixes riverfront lots, wooded homesites and older homes. It is a good fit for boaters and anglers who want to keep a boat close by. Some lots are low-lying, so ask about flood zones, elevation certificates and insurance before you make an offer.

Rural Supply Along N.C. 211

North of U.S. 17, N.C. 211 runs toward the Green Swamp through farmland and forest. Homes here tend to sit on bigger lots, often with wells and septic systems. It is the pick for people who want space for a workshop, garden or animals, and for buyers stretching a budget. Expect a longer drive to groceries, and check that a moving truck can get down a long gravel driveway.

Weather & Climate

Supply has a humid subtropical climate: long, hot summers and short, mild winters. The closest NOAA station with 1991–2020 normals is Shallotte AG, about 9 miles southwest. There, July averages a high of 87.2°F and a low of 73.1°F, while January averages a high of 55.6°F and a low of 36.4°F. The annual average temperature is 63.4°F.

The station averages 56.53 inches of precipitation a year, and the late-summer tropical season shows up clearly: September averages 9.66 inches and August 6.87 inches, more than any other months. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Supply is inland from the island, but tropical storms can still bring heavy rain, flooding on low roads and downed trees.

Best months to move: April (average high 72.0°F), May (78.4°F), October (74.3°F) and early November. Spring and fall avoid both the summer heat and the peak of the storm season, and you will also avoid most of the summer beach traffic.

Things to Do in Supply

Holden Beach

Holden Beach is Supply’s beach. The Town of Holden Beach describes more than eight miles of sandy beach on a barrier island with a deliberately small commercial area and a quiet, family-oriented feel. Boating, fishing, shelling and sea turtle season are the big draws. It is about 12.6 miles from central Supply.

Green Swamp Preserve

About five miles north of U.S. 17 on N.C. 211, The Nature Conservancy’s Green Swamp Preserve protects longleaf pine savanna famous for carnivorous plants, including Venus flytraps, pitcher plants and sundews, plus wild orchids. A marked trail runs 1.3 miles one way (2.6 miles round trip) and is open daily from dawn to dusk. Bring water and bug spray, and stay on the marked trail; there are no restrooms on site.

Lockwood Folly River

The river that gave Supply its name is still the area’s playground. Locals fish, kayak and run boats down the Lockwood Folly toward the inlet between Holden Beach and Oak Island. If you are moving here for the water, look for homes with a garage deep enough for a boat trailer, or check nearby storage options.

Southport and Oak Island Day Trips

Oak Island is about 13 miles away and Southport about 17. Southport’s waterfront is a favorite for an afternoon walk, and Oak Island gives you another long stretch of beach if Holden Beach is crowded.

Golf Around Brunswick County

The Town of Holden Beach notes more than 125 golf courses within an hour’s drive of the island. If golf is part of your retirement plan, Supply puts you in the middle of it.

Where to Eat in Supply

Patronies Pizza (Holden Beach Road)

A family pizza place at 2625 Holden Beach Road with a “Born in Brooklyn” style and family recipes. It is open for dinner, with a seasonal schedule, so call ahead in the off-season. Pizza on the first night in a new house is a moving-day tradition for a reason.

Mankins Causeway Cafe (Holden Beach Road)

A small, no-frills cafe near the causeway known for handmade burgers, hot dogs and fries. It is a quick, casual stop when you are running back and forth between the old place, the new place and the storage unit.

Lockwood Folly Marketplace (Stone Chimney Road)

A locally owned soup and sandwich shop at 48 Stone Chimney Road that uses Boar’s Head meats and cheeses and also caters. It is open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays until 2:30 p.m. Good to know if you want to feed a group of family helpers.

Jobs & Economy

Supply sits close to several of the county’s biggest employment centers. Brunswick County’s government complex is in nearby Bolivia, Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center is on Hospital Drive in the Bolivia/Supply area, and Brunswick Community College’s main campus is on College Road nearby.

According to the NC Rural Center, retail trade was Brunswick County’s top industry by employment in 2023, with 6,437 workers, and the county’s largest single employer was the Brunswick County Board of Education, with more than 1,000 employees. The county averaged a 4.2% unemployment rate in 2023, and the average weekly wage was $953. Tourism, construction and health care all grow with the county’s population. Many residents also commute to Wilmington, about 36 minutes away.

Schools in Supply

Public schools are run by Brunswick County Schools, which reported 13,262 students in 20 schools in 2023–24, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Two schools have Supply addresses:

  • Supply Elementary School (51 Benton Road SE): pre-K through 5th grade, 569 students
  • Cedar Grove Middle School (750 Grove Trail SW): grades 6–8, 457 students

High schools in the southern part of the county include West Brunswick High in Shallotte and South Brunswick High near Southport. Attendance zones depend on your exact address, so confirm your assigned schools with the district before you sign a lease or contract. For college, Brunswick Community College has its main campus nearby on College Road NE, and it also hosts Brunswick County Early College High School.

Moving to Supply: Tips From Our Crew

  • Avoid Saturday move dates in summer. Saturday is rental turnover day at Holden Beach, and Holden Beach Road and U.S. 17 fill with beach traffic. A weekday move, or an early start, saves time and money.
  • Tell us about long driveways and soft ground. Many homes off N.C. 211 and the back roads sit on long gravel or sand drives. After heavy rain, some of those can swallow a truck. We can plan the right size truck or a shuttle if we know ahead of time.
  • Check flood zones before you pick a move date. Lots near the Lockwood Folly River and low roads can flood after a tropical storm. If a storm is in the forecast, keep your date flexible. We never charge a rescheduling fee.
  • Plan for stilts and stairs near the water. Raised homes near the river and on the island often have one or two flights of exterior stairs before you reach the front door. Let us know so we bring enough crew and the right equipment.
  • Beat the heat. July highs average about 87°F with high humidity. Start early, keep water on hand for everyone, and get the AC running at the new house before we arrive.
  • Use storage if you are building. A lot of people moving to Supply are waiting on new construction. Our storage can hold your things between closing on one house and finishing the next.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving to Supply

How much does it cost to hire movers in Supply?

It depends on the size of your home, the distance, how much packing you need and access at both ends, such as stairs or long driveways. The quickest way to get a real price is a free quote. Call our NC & SC team at 910-758-0081, and an owner will call you back within 15 minutes between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Is Supply, NC a town?

No. Supply is an unincorporated community in Brunswick County, so there is no town government or town police. County services come from Brunswick County, whose government center is in nearby Bolivia. Supply does have its own ZIP code, 28462, which also covers Holden Beach.

How far is Supply from the beach?

Holden Beach is about 12.6 miles from central Supply, roughly 22 minutes by car, and Oak Island is about 13 miles. Many homes along Holden Beach Road are much closer. In summer, allow extra time for traffic.

Is Supply a good place to retire?

Many people think so. The ZIP code’s median age is 55.4, homes on the mainland cost far less than beach property, and the hospital, community college and county services are all close by. The tradeoff is driving for most shopping and some specialty medical care, which may mean a trip to Wilmington.

Can you move me to Supply from out of state?

Yes. For long-distance moves, you get a binding estimate, your own dedicated truck, the same W-2 crew from door to door and a guaranteed delivery date. See our Supply movers page for details.
