Historic brick railroad station on Main Street in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania

Moving to Shrewsbury, PA: Living in Shrewsbury Guide

Shrewsbury is a small, established borough at the southern end of York County, a few minutes from the Maryland line and right on Interstate 83. Its Main Street follows the old York–Baltimore Turnpike, and the historic district along it includes log homes built before 1800. Step off Main Street and you find sycamore-lined residential streets, a borough park, and quick access to the Heritage Rail Trail and the farm markets that draw shoppers from both states.

Shrewsbury suits people who commute to Hunt Valley, Towson or Baltimore but want Pennsylvania living, families who want Southern York County schools, and empty nesters and retirees looking for a quiet, walkable borough. About four in five homes are owner-occupied, and the median age is over 50, so this is a settled community where people tend to stay.

Is Shrewsbury Safe?

We did not find a borough-level crime report we could cite, so we are not quoting a crime rate. The Census Bureau puts Shrewsbury’s poverty rate at 4.2%, about half the county rate, and most homes are owner-occupied, but that is no substitute for your own homework.

Police service comes from the Southern Regional Police Department, based at 49 East High Street in New Freedom. According to the borough, the department started on January 1, 1992, and serves Shrewsbury, Stewartstown and New Freedom, with part-time coverage for Glen Rock, Railroad and the Southern York County School District. The borough lists nine officers and one civilian employee, and the department runs community programs such as crime prevention and Block Watch. Before you buy, visit the street at night and on a weekend and talk to a neighbor or two.

Cost of Living in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury costs more than the York County average, which reflects its location near the Maryland line, its schools and its well-kept older housing.

Home Prices

Zillow’s Home Value Index (smoothed and seasonally adjusted) puts the typical Shrewsbury home value at about $356,900 as of August 31, 2026, up 2.2% from a year earlier. That compares with about $311,100 for York County and about $290,400 for Pennsylvania on the same index.

The Census Bureau’s measure, the median value of owner-occupied homes, was $298,100 for 2020–2024. That is above York County ($248,600) and Pennsylvania ($254,500) but below the national figure of $332,700. The Census number reflects what owners reported over five years, while Zillow tracks current market values. According to the 2020 Census, the homeowner vacancy rate was just 1.3%, so there are rarely many houses on the market at once.

Rent

Rentals are limited. Median gross rent in Shrewsbury was $1,044 a month for 2020–2024, compared with $1,193 for York County, $1,209 for Pennsylvania and $1,413 for the United States. The 2020 Census counted a rental vacancy rate of 5.0%. Zillow does not publish a rent index for Shrewsbury itself, so check current listings in Shrewsbury, New Freedom and the surrounding townships to get a realistic picture of asking rents today.

Best Neighborhoods in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury is small, but where you live in and around it changes your day-to-day life.

The Main Street Historic District

Shrewsbury was laid out in 1797 by Baltzer Faust along both sides of Joppa Road, later the York–Baltimore Turnpike and now Main Street. The Shrewsbury Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, includes 152 contributing buildings, a few of them log dwellings built before 1800, plus the 1853 Odd Fellows Hall and two Romanesque Revival churches. It suits buyers who love older homes and want to walk to local restaurants. Expect traffic on Main Street and older floor plans.

Residential Streets Near Sweeney Park

Sweeney Park is the borough’s main recreation space, with a pavilion residents can reserve from mid-May to mid-October. The residential blocks near it appeal to families and retirees who want a quieter street while still living inside the borough, with borough water, sewer and trash service. It is a good fit for anyone who wants small-town convenience without being right on Main Street.

Shrewsbury Township

Shrewsbury Township surrounds the borough and also wraps around Glen Rock, Railroad and New Freedom. It had 6,657 residents at the 2020 Census and covers about 29 square miles along I-83. Buyers who want acreage, newer homes or more room for garages and outbuildings often look here while keeping Southern York County schools. Always confirm whether an address is in the borough or the township, because services, taxes and permits differ.

Weather & Climate

Shrewsbury has four distinct seasons. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for York, about 15 miles north and published on Wikipedia, show a January average high of 41.2°F with lows around 21.3°F, and a July average high of 87.7°F with lows around 63.1°F. York averages about 46 inches of precipitation and 24.6 inches of snow a year, with January (8.5 inches) and February (8.2 inches) the snowiest months.

For moving, late April through early June and September through October are usually the most comfortable. Summer is popular with families but hot and humid. In winter, the borough declares snow emergencies that ban parking on snow emergency routes and local streets, which matters if you were counting on curb space for a truck.

Things to Do in Shrewsbury

Heritage Rail Trail County Park

York County’s Heritage Rail Trail runs 27 miles from the Mason-Dixon Line just south of New Freedom through Glen Rock, Hanover Junction and Seven Valleys to the Colonial Courthouse in York, according to York County Parks. From I-83 Exit 4, the county’s directions send you west on Route 851 about 3 miles to a trail parking area. Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes are allowed on this trail, the only county park where they are.

Northern Central Railway

Next door in New Freedom, the Northern Central Railway runs excursion trains along the tracks beside the rail trail between New Freedom and Seven Valleys. York County Parks reminds trail users that the tracks are active and a train can come by at any time, which is part of the fun on a weekend walk.

The Markets at Shrewsbury

Just outside the borough, with a Glen Rock mailing address, the Markets at Shrewsbury sells handcrafted Amish and artisan goods and hosts local vendors. It is open Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it runs seasonal events such as cruise nights. It is an easy place to stock a new kitchen with meats, cheeses and baked goods.

Sweeney Park

The borough describes Sweeney Park as a gift from Shrewsbury’s citizens to themselves, and it is the town’s main recreation space. Its pavilion can be rented by the day from mid-May to mid-October at a lower rate for borough residents. The park closes at dusk and does not allow alcohol.

Lake Redman and Antiques

Explore York points visitors from Shrewsbury to Lake Redman at William H. Kain County Park and to the Shrewsbury Antique Center, with more than 10,000 square feet of antiques and collectibles. York County manages about 4,500 acres of public park land in all.

Moving to Shrewsbury: Tips From Our Crew

  • Watch for snow emergencies. Under the borough’s snow emergency ordinance, parking is banned on snow emergency routes and local streets during declared emergencies. Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours of a snowfall. For a winter move, keep a backup date and plan where the truck can legally park.
  • Time I-83 around rush hour. If you are coming up from Baltimore County, the Hunt Valley and Towson stretch of I-83 is busiest at commute times. A mid-morning start usually gets the truck to Exit 4 faster.
  • Know your state paperwork. Moving from Maryland to Pennsylvania means a new driver’s license, vehicle registration and local earned income tax setup. Start the list early so it does not pile up after moving day.
  • Plan for older homes on Main Street. Historic district homes, some dating to before 1800, can have narrow stairs, low doorways and small landings. Measure your largest pieces so we can plan disassembly and protection.
  • Recycle electronics the right way. Under Pennsylvania’s Act 108, the borough’s hauler will not take TVs, computers and similar devices. The York County Solid Waste Authority accepts them free at its Flour Mill Road facility on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday mornings. For everything else you do not want to move, try our junk removal service.
  • Downsizing? Many Shrewsbury moves are empty nesters moving to a smaller home. Our storage and packing services can help you sort what goes, what stays and what waits.
