Brandywine Boulevard, the main street of Bellefonte, Delaware, with shops and parked cars

Moving to Bellefonte, DE: Living in Bellefonte Guide

Bellefonte is one of the smallest towns in Delaware, and one of the easiest to fall for. The whole town covers about two-tenths of a square mile just north of Wilmington, between Philadelphia Pike and the Delaware River. It started as one of Wilmington’s early streetcar suburbs, and it still feels like one: older single homes on short, tree-lined streets, a main street (Brandywine Boulevard) with vintage shops, an art gallery and a cafe with live music, and two state parks within a couple of miles.

Bellefonte suits people who want a walkable, small-town block with a real sense of neighbors, but who also want to be 10 minutes from downtown Wilmington and well under an hour from Philadelphia. Commuters, artists, first-time buyers who like older houses, and empty nesters who want less yard all find their way here. Because there are only about 600 homes in town, good houses do not sit long.

Our Bellefonte movers know these streets well. Planning a move to Bellefonte? Call our Tri-State team at 410-499-8777 or get your price online.

Where Is Bellefonte?

Bellefonte is a town in New Castle County in northern Delaware, in the Brandywine Hundred area north of Wilmington. The Delaware Public Archives describes it as the area north of Rodman Road between Philadelphia Pike and River Road. Brandywine Boulevard is the main street and runs southwest to northeast through town, and U.S. Route 13 Business (Philadelphia Pike) runs along the northwestern edge. DART First State buses serve the town.

Interstate 495 runs along the river just east of town, which makes Bellefonte an easy hop to I-95, the Delaware Memorial Bridge and Philadelphia. The Wilmington train station downtown has Amtrak and SEPTA regional rail service, and Philadelphia International Airport is the closest major airport.

From Bellefonte to Driving distance Typical drive (light traffic)

Bellefonte Population & Demographics

Bellefonte is tiny. The town had 1,193 residents at the 2010 Census and 1,225 at the 2020 Census. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey (ACS) estimates about 1,388 people, living in 610 housing units. Because the town is so small, ACS figures here come with wide margins of error, so treat them as a general picture rather than exact counts.

A few more details from the same ACS data: 97.9% of adults 25 and older have at least a high school diploma, about 4.5% of residents were born outside the U.S., and the average household has 2.4 people. Only 3.5% of residents moved in during the prior year, which tells you people tend to stay once they arrive. With roughly 7,800 people per square mile, Bellefonte is denser than it looks, because the lots are small and the streets are close together.

Is Bellefonte Safe?

We did not find a recent, reliable crime report for Bellefonte by itself worth quoting. With about 1,400 residents, small numbers can swing a lot from year to year anyway. The best approach is to ask the Town Commission which police agency responds on your street, check recent incidents on that agency’s public reports, and walk the block at different times of day. Many residents also sign up for the town’s alerts and follow the safety resources on the Town of Bellefonte website.

Cost of Living in Bellefonte

Delaware has no statewide sales tax, which you notice quickly on furniture, appliances and everything else a new home needs. Housing is where the real budget question is.

Home Prices

The Census Bureau puts the median value of owner-occupied homes in Bellefonte at $289,500 (2020–2024), below the Delaware median of $352,000 and the U.S. median of $332,700. Recent sales run higher. Redfin reports a median sale price of about $312,000 for the three months ending August 2026, down 4.6% from a year earlier, at about $255 per square foot. Homes sold in a median of 28 days. For the wider county, Zillow’s typical home value for New Castle County was $369,618 as of July 2026.

Keep the sample size in mind: Redfin counted just five Bellefonte sales in August 2026, so one unusual house can move the median. Homes.com notes that most three-bedroom homes in town fall between $300,000 and $500,000, with a mix of Cape Cods, colonials and 1920s farmhouses.

Rent

Bellefonte has few rentals. The ACS puts the town’s median gross rent at $1,511 a month (2020–2024), compared with $1,401 for Delaware and $1,413 nationally. Zillow’s average rent for New Castle County was $1,892 as of July 2026. Most rentals here are single homes or units in older houses, so expect to watch listings for a while and to move quickly when the right one comes up.

Best Neighborhoods in Bellefonte

Bellefonte is too small to have formal neighborhoods of its own, but it does have distinct sections. When the town was incorporated in 1915, it was made up of three subdivisions: Montrose, Montrose Terrace and Montrose Terrace Addition. Today, most people think of it in terms of how close they are to Brandywine Boulevard.

Brandywine Boulevard

The homes on and just off Brandywine Boulevard put you steps from the Shops of Bellefonte, Bellefonte Arts and the Bellefonte Cafe. This is the part of town for people who want to walk to dinner, browse vintage shops on a Saturday and know the people behind the counter. The trade-off is more foot and car traffic, especially during festivals and events, and less on-street parking on busy nights.

The Side Streets Between the Boulevard and Philadelphia Pike

The short residential streets on the Philadelphia Pike side of town are quieter, with older single homes and small yards. They suit families and commuters who want quick access to Philadelphia Pike, DART buses and I-495 but still want a calm block. Many homes here date to the first half of the 20th century, so plan for narrower stairways and smaller closets than in newer suburbs.

The River Road Side

The eastern edge of town, toward River Road, sits closest to Bellevue State Park and Fox Point State Park. It is a good fit for runners, dog owners and anyone who wants trails and river views within a couple of minutes. You are also the closest to I-495 here, which makes weekday trips to Wilmington or Philadelphia straightforward.

Weather & Climate

Northern Delaware has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers, cool to cold winters and precipitation spread fairly evenly through the year. Using NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for New Castle County Airport, as summarized on Wikipedia, January averages a high of 41.4°F and a low of 25.6°F, while July averages a high of 86.8°F and a low of 68.3°F. The area gets 45.33 inches of precipitation and 20.2 inches of snow in an average year, and it averages 21 days a year at 90°F or higher.

Best months to move: May, June and mid-September through October are the most comfortable. Summer moves are fine with an early start. In winter, keep a backup date in mind, because a few inches of snow on Bellefonte’s narrow streets and front steps slows everything down.

Things to Do in Bellefonte

Bellevue State Park

Bellevue State Park covers 331 acres right next to town. It was the estate of William du Pont Jr., who remodeled the Gothic Revival Woolton Hall into Bellevue Hall, a replica of Montpelier. The state bought the property in 1976. Today it offers hiking, biking, fishing and disc golf, plus the Bellevue Tennis Center. Delaware State Parks runs guided mansion tours on the third Saturday of most months.

Fox Point State Park

About two miles from town, Fox Point is a 93-acre park on the Delaware River that was reclaimed from an old railroad landfill. It has walking and biking paths, picnic areas, playgrounds and volleyball courts, with views of the Philadelphia skyline to the north and the Delaware Memorial Bridge to the south. It is also the northern end of the Coastal Heritage Greenway and a good spot to watch migrating birds.

The Shops of Bellefonte

The Shops of Bellefonte are the small-business district along Brandywine Boulevard and Philadelphia Pike, with vintage shops, gift stores, galleries, cafes and a seasonal farmers market in summer. Bellefonte Arts and the Bellefonte Arts Festival

Bellefonte Arts runs a gallery at 803-C Brandywine Boulevard and organizes community events such as Bellefonte Day and shop-and-stroll weekends. The biggest day of the year is the Bellefonte Arts Festival, held on the third Saturday in May, when the whole boulevard fills with artists and neighbors.

Brandywine Park and the Brandywine Zoo

About five miles away in Wilmington, the Brandywine Zoo opened in 1905 on 4.7 acres inside Brandywine Park. It is managed by the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation and focuses on animals such as Andean condors, red pandas and capybaras. It is small enough for toddlers, and the park around it is great for a picnic along the creek.

Where to Eat in Bellefonte

The Bellefonte Cafe (Brandywine Boulevard)

At 804 Brandywine Boulevard, the Bellefonte Cafe calls itself “the funkiest restaurant in town.” It serves contemporary American food with local partners, including crab cakes from Henretty’s and coffee from Rock Bottom Roasters, and it books live music. It is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday, with Sunday brunch and supper, and closed Mondays.

Claymont Steak Shop (Philadelphia Pike, Claymont)

A few miles north at 3526 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont Steak Shop has been making cheesesteaks since 1966, using ribeye sliced on site. It also does pizza, subs and salads, and it is the easy answer for feeding a moving crew or a hungry family on move-in night. There are also locations on Concord Pike and in Newark.

Mrs. Robino’s (Little Italy, Wilmington)

For a sit-down Italian dinner, Mrs. Robino’s at 520 North Union Street is a family-owned kitchen that makes fresh pasta and homemade sauce every day. It is about 6 miles from Bellefonte and has the classic, comfortable neighborhood feel that makes it a regular stop for a lot of local families.

  • Science and manufacturing: DuPont, AstraZeneca and other chemical, pharmaceutical and technology companies have a big footprint in northern Delaware.
  • Philadelphia: With I-495, I-95 and regional rail nearby, commuting to Philadelphia jobs is realistic.

Moving to Bellefonte: Tips From Our Crew

Here is what our Bellefonte moving crews have learned working in town and across Brandywine Hundred.

  • Tell us about your street before moving day. Bellefonte’s streets are short and close together, and cars often line both sides. Let us know whether a full-size truck can get near the door, and we will plan the right truck and a shuttle if needed.
  • Save a parking spot. The town website does not post moving-truck rules, so check with the Town Commission if you need to reserve space or place a container. Asking neighbors to leave the curb open in front of your house for a few hours makes a real difference.
  • Measure the old-house details. Many Bellefonte homes are 70 to 100 years old, with narrow stairways, tight turns and small bedroom doors. Measure your sofa, box spring and dressers against the stairs before moving day. Our packing and unpacking crews can disassemble and wrap large pieces.
  • Plan around trash day. Trash goes out every Friday, with recycling and yard waste every other Friday. If you are unpacking a houseful of boxes, time your move so the recycling can go out soon after, or ask us about junk removal.
  • Avoid festival Saturdays. On the third Saturday in May, the Bellefonte Arts Festival takes over Brandywine Boulevard. Pick another day unless you like maneuvering a truck around a street fair.
  • Time the I-495 and I-95 run. If you are coming from Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Maryland, a mid-morning arrival avoids the worst rush hour around Wilmington.
  • Get building permits from the county. If you plan renovations after you move in, Bellefonte’s building permits go through New Castle County, not the town.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving to Bellefonte

How much does it cost to hire movers in Bellefonte?

It depends on how much you are moving, how far, stairs and parking at both homes, and any packing you need. A small apartment across town and a four-bedroom house going out of state are very different jobs. The fastest way to get a real number is to call our Tri-State team at 410-499-8777 for a free quote. An owner will call you back within 15 minutes between 8am and 8pm.

Is Bellefonte part of Wilmington?

No. Bellefonte is its own incorporated town with a five-member Town Commission, even though its mailing addresses often say Wilmington and it shares the 19809 ZIP code with nearby communities. Building permits are handled by New Castle County.

What school district serves Bellefonte?

The Brandywine School District. Wikipedia lists Mount Pleasant Elementary, P.S. DuPont Middle and Mount Pleasant High as the zoned schools for Bellefonte. Boundaries can change, so confirm your specific address with the district before you commit to a home.

Is Bellefonte a good place to buy a first home?

It can be. The Census Bureau’s median home value for the town is $289,500, below the Delaware median, and recent Redfin data shows sales around $312,000. The catch is supply: with only about 600 homes, not many come up for sale in a given month, so get preapproved and be ready to move quickly.

How far is Bellefonte from Philadelphia?

Philadelphia City Hall is about 27 miles away, roughly 45 minutes with light traffic using I-495 and I-95. Philadelphia International Airport is about 18 miles. Regional rail from the Wilmington train station is another option for downtown commuters.
