Moving to Ash, NC: Living in Ash Guide

Ash is a rural community in western Brunswick County, set along N.C. 130 about 10 miles northwest of Shallotte. It isn’t an incorporated town; it’s a crossroads community with its own post office, which opened in 1884, and its own ZIP code, 28420. Around it you’ll find rural roads, two public schools and plenty of room between neighbors.

Ash suits people who want land, lower home prices and a quiet country setting, while staying within about 15 to 20 miles of Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Calabash, and about 23 miles of North Myrtle Beach. It is not a place for anyone who wants to walk to a coffee shop. Groceries, restaurants and most services are a drive away in Shallotte or Calabash. This guide covers the numbers, the trade-offs and what moving day looks like in the country, from the team behind our Ash movers page. Our NC office is in Calabash, about 16 miles away.

Is Ash Safe?

We haven’t found crime statistics published for Ash itself, and because it is unincorporated, it doesn’t have its own police department. Law enforcement comes from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, headquartered in Bolivia, which takes crime tips online and posts updates on its website and social media. If you’re considering a particular road, call the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line with questions, talk to neighbors, and visit at different times of day.

Cost of Living in Ash

Housing is where Ash stands out. Home values here sit well below the Brunswick County typical value, which can make the area a fit for first-time buyers, families who want more space and retirees stretching a budget. The trade-off is driving: plan for fuel and time for groceries, errands and commuting.

Home Prices

Zillow’s Home Value Index for Ash was $271,522 in August 2026, up 0.4% from $270,451 a year earlier. Its index for the 28420 ZIP code was $267,582, essentially flat from $267,808 a year earlier. By comparison, Zillow’s typical home value was $404,783 for Brunswick County, $334,773 for North Carolina and $368,697 for the U.S. The Census Bureau’s survey-based median home value for ZIP 28420 was $198,100 for 2020–2024.

If you’re buying land to build, ask about well, septic and utility connections early in the process, and budget time for county permits, which are handled in Bolivia.

Rent

Rentals are scarce in the country. The Census Bureau’s median gross rent for ZIP 28420 was $1,135 for 2020–2024, below the county’s $1,351. Zillow doesn’t publish a rent index for Ash. For comparison, its Observed Rent Index was $1,734 for Brunswick County and $1,948 for the U.S. in August 2026. If you find a year-round rental in the Ash area, expect to move quickly when it’s listed.

Best Areas in and Around Ash

Ash doesn’t have subdivisions in the suburban sense. Instead, think about which part of the community fits your routine.

The N.C. 130 Corridor

The main road through Ash is N.C. 130, and homes along and just off it have the easiest access to Shallotte to the southeast and Whiteville to the northwest. It suits commuters and anyone who wants a straight shot to shopping, while still living in the country.

Near the Schools

Ash is home to two Brunswick County public schools: Waccamaw School, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade, and Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary. Families with younger children often want to be close to them, since school runs are part of the daily drive. Confirm school assignments for any address with the district before you buy.

Country Roads and Acreage

Away from N.C. 130, homes along quieter back roads offer more privacy and, often, room for a garden, a workshop or a boat trailer. This part of Ash suits people who want space and don’t mind a longer drive. Before you buy, check internet options, flood maps and road access for large trucks.

Weather & Climate

The nearest NOAA normals station is in Longwood, about 4 miles south of Ash. Its 1991–2020 normals put the annual average temperature at 62.6°F. July averages a high of 88.2°F and a low of 72.0°F. January averages a high of 55.8°F and a low of 34.4°F, and snowfall averages half an inch a year.

Rain averages 57.02 inches a year. September is the wettest month at 7.53 inches, followed by August at 7.36 inches, while April is the driest at 3.36 inches. That lines up with the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 through November 30, with most storms in August through October, according to NOAA. Ash is inland, but heavy rain and fallen trees can still block rural roads after a storm.

Best months to move: April (average high 73.0°F), May (79.6°F), October (74.4°F) and November (65.5°F).

Things to Do in and Around Ash

Green Swamp Preserve

East of Ash, The Nature Conservancy’s 17,424-acre Green Swamp Preserve sits on N.C. 211 about five miles north of Supply. It protects one of the country’s best examples of longleaf pine savanna, with Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, sundews, wild orchids and red-cockaded woodpeckers. A marked 1.3-mile trail is open daily from dawn to dusk; bring water and bug spray.

Lake Waccamaw State Park

About 27 miles from Ash in Columbus County, this park sits on the largest Carolina bay, a lake with 14 miles of shoreline and aquatic species found nowhere else in the world. It has about 10 miles of trails, boat ramps, camping and no day-use fee.

The Brunswick Beaches

Sunset Beach (about 15 miles), Ocean Isle Beach (about 19 miles) and Holden Beach (about 23 miles) are all an easy drive. Living in Ash means you can have a country home during the week and a beach day on Saturday.

Shallotte and the Shallotte River

Shallotte, about 11 miles away, is the nearest town for shopping and errands. Brunswick County’s tourism office recommends the scenic drive to Shallotte Point, where twisted live oaks frame views of the Shallotte River.

Calabash-Style Seafood

Calabash, about 16 miles from Ash, is known far and wide for Calabash-style seafood, and restaurants such as Beck’s on River Road have been part of that tradition for years. It’s also home to our NC office, so a seafood dinner there makes a good excuse to stop by and say hello.

North Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand

At about 23 miles, North Myrtle Beach and the rest of South Carolina’s Grand Strand are close enough for dinner, shows and shopping without an overnight trip.

Where to Eat Near Ash

Ash doesn’t have much of a restaurant scene of its own, so locals drive to Shallotte and Calabash. Here are three established picks.

Purple Onion Cafe (Shallotte, Cheers Street)

This cafe at 111 Cheers Street in Shallotte, featured by the county’s tourism office, pairs a casual cafe with a catering business. It’s a handy stop when you’re running errands in town.

Beck’s Restaurant (Calabash, River Road)

Beck’s, at 1014 River Road in Calabash, is a family-owned spot serving Calabash-style seafood with a Southern scratch kitchen. It’s open for lunch and dinner, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Calabash Seafood Hut (Calabash)

This family-owned restaurant has been frying seafood for about 40 years and is easy to spot by its blue awning. It draws a crowd, and takeout is available.

Jobs & Economy

Ash is mostly residential and rural, so most working residents commute. Shallotte, about 11 miles away, is the closest town for retail and services. Whiteville, about 24 miles up N.C. 130, is another option.

Moving to Ash: Tips From Our Crew

  • Tell us about the driveway. Some country homes have long gravel or dirt drives, tight turns, low branches or soft ground after rain. Let our Ash moving team know when you book. We may bring a smaller truck or plan a shuttle so we don’t get stuck in the yard.
  • Give us a landmark, not just an address. Rural addresses can be tricky for GPS. A nearby church, school or crossroads helps the crew find you on the first try.
  • Plan for barns, sheds and shops. Acreage moves often include tools, mowers, lumber and equipment. Walk through outbuildings before your quote so nothing surprises the crew on moving day.
  • Watch the weather after storms. From August through October, leave a flexible day. Heavy rain can make unpaved drives impassable for a loaded truck.
  • Check burn bans before clearing brush. Brunswick County issues burn bans for unincorporated areas during dry spells. If you’re cleaning up the property before or after the move, check the current rules.
  • Coming from out of state? Our long-distance moves include a binding estimate that doesn’t change after booking, your own dedicated truck, the same W-2 crew door to door and a guaranteed delivery date. If your closing date slips, our storage can hold your things until the house is ready.
  • Downsizing or clearing out an old homestead? Our junk removal can haul away what you don’t want, and our heavy item crew handles safes, pianos and other big pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving to Ash
