Moving Insurance and Valuation Coverage
Most people assume their belongings are fully insured during a move. Often they are not. Here is how moving coverage really works, in plain English.
Valuation and Insurance Are Not the Same Thing
Movers offer what is called valuation coverage, which is the mover’s responsibility for loss or damage while your belongings are in their care. It is not an insurance policy, and the amount it pays depends on the level you choose.
Coverage Levels You May Be Offered
| Level | How It Works | Good to Know |
|---|---|---|
| Basic (released value) | Pays a set amount based on the weight of the damaged item, not what it is worth. On interstate moves the federal minimum is 60 cents per pound per article. | A 20-pound TV would be covered for about $12 under this level. |
| Full value protection | Repair, replace or pay for the current value of the item, depending on the terms. | Usually adds to the cost of the move. |
| Third-party insurance | A separate policy from an insurance company that covers your belongings in transit. | Ask your insurer what it covers and what it excludes. |
Ask for the exact options for your move, in writing, before you book. Rules differ for local, in-state and interstate moves.
What Is Included With Every Move
- A licensed, insured, background-checked W-2 crew. No day laborers or subcontractors.
- Wrapping and padding of all of your furniture
- A certificate of insurance for your building, if you need one
Our crews wrap, pad and protect every piece of furniture, and damage is rare.
If Something Gets Damaged
Report any damage or missing items within 7 days of your move so we can inspect, repair or replace it quickly. That request does not shorten any time you have under state or federal law. For example, interstate moves and North Carolina moves allow up to 9 months from delivery to file a written claim.
An owner will call you personally the same day we receive your claim. See our full insurance claim policy for the three ways to file.
Protect High-Value Items
- Photograph valuable items and note their condition before the move
- Tell us about anything unusually valuable or fragile when you get your quote
- Keep jewelry, documents, medications and irreplaceable items with you
- Check what your homeowner’s or renter’s policy covers during a move
