Mechanicsburg is a railroad-era borough in eastern Cumberland County, about eight miles west of Harrisburg. It takes its name from the mechanics who built and repaired Conestoga wagons here in the early 1800s, and its downtown still has historic buildings, a museum complex around the old train stations and Jubilee Day, one of the longest-running one-day street fairs on the East Coast. Around the borough, fast-growing townships like Upper Allen, Hampden and Silver Spring add newer neighborhoods and more housing choices.
Mechanicsburg suits commuters to Harrisburg, military and civilian families tied to Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg, and anyone who wants a real small-town main street with every highway in central Pennsylvania close by. It is also a college town of sorts, with Messiah University just south of the borough. Prices vary a lot between the borough and the townships, so know which one you are shopping in.

Is Mechanicsburg Safe?
We did not find a current, reliable crime-rate comparison for Mechanicsburg, so we are not quoting one. Moving to Mechanicsburg: Tips From Our Crew
- Confirm your school district by address. A Mechanicsburg mailing address can put you in the Mechanicsburg Area or Cumberland Valley school district. Check with the district before you sign anything, especially if you have kids.
- Avoid Jubilee Day and big downtown events. Street festivals close or crowd Main Street. If you are moving into or out of the downtown area, check the Downtown Mechanicsburg Partnership calendar first.
- Plan around race nights. Traffic near Williams Grove Speedway picks up on race nights, especially during the National Open in early October. Moves in that direction go more smoothly earlier in the day.
- Know your interchanges. The Carlisle Pike, Trindle Road and the ramps to I-81, US 15 and the Turnpike get congested at rush hour. We schedule start times to keep the loaded truck out of the worst of it.
- Military move? Tell us early. If your move is connected to NSA Mechanicsburg or another assignment, we offer military moves with 5% off.
- Older downtown homes need prep. Row homes and twins near Main Street often have steep stairs and narrow doorways. Measure large furniture ahead of time, and let our crew take apart beds and tables.
- Moving an office? The Mechanicsburg area has many professional offices and warehouses. Our office moving team can plan an after-hours or weekend move to limit downtime.
